Istanbul has many monuments as it is a city that stretches back to the first human civilizations. From amazing towers to beautiful mosques, you will find the best monuments in Istanbul!
Cemberlitas Column
Cemberlitas Column located on one of the seven hills of the Historic Peninsula in Istanbul is almost as old as the history of Istanbul. It is located in Cemberlitas Square in the center of the Historic Peninsula. The column is also located on Divanyolu, which is located between Sultanahmet Square and Beyazit Mosque. Nuruosmaniye Mosque and the Grand Bazaar are near the column. The Cemberlitas Column, which was attributed to great importance in the Roman and Byzantine periods, did not lose its importance in the Ottoman period and reached today through various repairs. This 1700-year-old monumental building witnessing the history of Istanbul is one of the must-see works in the Historic Peninsula. While it was 57 meters long with the statue on it at the time of its construction, its current length is 37 meters.
Republic Monument
In 1928, The Republic Monument in Taksim Square was made of bronze and concrete with the financial support of the people and placed in its current location. Considering that the monument costs 165 thousand Liras, it is understood that 74.4% of the cost was covered by the public and various organizations. It is one of the most important monuments reflecting the republic. The statue which is one of the symbols of Istanbul has 2 banners besides having Atatürk and his comrades in arms, symbolizing the national struggle and the modern face of Turkey. Another striking figure in the monument is the two Mehmetcik figures, who are said to be the permanent guardians of the pact-i national borders, with the Turkish flag and flag in their hands. The Taksim Republic Monument, which has been spoken for years, was opened at 18:00 on August 8, 1928, in front of a crowd of at least 30 thousand people and with a magnificent ceremony.
Constantine Obelisk (Konstantin Dikilitas)
The Constantine Obelisk (also known as the Knitted Obelisk) is located on the south side of Sultanahmet Square next to the Serpent Column. While you are there, you can buy a lot of things for you or your lovers from Sultanahmet Square. It is 32 meters long. The brass plates covering the top of the column and the bronze sphere on top of it were used for coin making by the Latins who occupied the city in 1204, as they were dismantled like many statues and decorations in the Hippodrome. During the Roman Period, it was believed that many columns in Istanbul were enchanted and each of these columns protected the city from various disasters such as war, natural disaster, and disease. In addition, it is believed to protect Istanbul from earthquakes. These superstitions continued in the Ottoman period as well.
Kıztası (Girl Stone)
The work that gave its name to Kıztası Street, one of the first Turkish neighborhoods established after the conquest, is a monumental column erected in 455 AD by the Roman Emperor Marcianus in his name. It was made in two pieces of red-gray Egyptian granite. Its base is four-sided and made of white marble. The medallions on all three sides of it are decorated with Greek Crosses. Due to the presence of the Nike Statue on its pedestal, it is known as the Kıztası among the people. There is also an inscription on the west side of the pedestal. On the other three sides, there is a monogram of Christ in a wreath made of laurel leaves in reliefs that follow each other.
