The Five Bridges of Istanbul

When a strait separates two cities, there are certain to be a few bridges that connect them and draw the eye in. Bridges that connect Istanbul's Asian and European sides, as well as Fatih, have become famous visual emblems of the city.

1- The Bosphorus Bridge

The '15 July Martyrs Bridge,' a gravity-anchored steel suspension bridge built between 1970 and 1973, was renamed this year to honor the civilians who died in the failed coup. On a daily basis, around 180,000 automobiles pass in both ways. On the bridge's roadway, there are eight lanes. There are three regular lanes, one emergency lane, and one pedestrian lane in each direction. On weekday mornings, the bulk of commuter traffic heads westbound to Europe, hence four of the six lanes are allocated to westbound traffic and just two to eastbound traffic. On weeknights, however, two lanes are allocated to eastbound traffic and four lanes are dedicated to westbound traffic.

2- Galata Bridge

The Galata Bridge, which crosses the Golden Horn and was built in the nineteenth century, has been depicted in Turkish literature and theatre several times. The rows of fisherman on each side of this steel bascule bridge, as well as the balk ekmek (fish sandwich) restaurants that line the lower section, have become iconic sights of Istanbul. The Galata Bridge served as a symbolic connection between Istanbul proper, which housed the imperial palace and the empire's primary religious and secular institutions, and the non-Muslim neighborhoods of Galata, Beyoglu, IÅŸli, and Harbiye, which were home to foreign merchants and diplomats. According to Peyami Safa's book Fatih-Harbiye, everyone who crossed the Fatih-Harbiye bridge joined a new culture and society. In addition to its mythical aspect, the Galata Bridge's magnificent sight inspired several paintings and engravings.

3- Sultan Selim Bridge

The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, which connects Garipçe on the European side with Poyrazköy on the Asian side, was recently opened near the Black Sea entrance of the Bosphorus. The city's natural areas and wetlands, which supply the bulk of the city's drinking water, are threatened by the hybrid cable-stayed suspension bridge, which is considered as a harbinger to an urbanization boom.

4- The Golden Horn Bridge

One of the city's newest constructions, the Golden Horn Metro Bridge, was built in 2014 and connects the Beyoglu and Fatih districts through the M2 line. The steel cable-stayed bridge created a lot of controversy during construction since it changed the skyline of the city's historic area. In 1952, the bridge project was included to the general agenda for the first time. After the city's Monuments Protection Board authorized the metro line and the tunnels associated to the metro line were constructed, the Metropolitan Municipality presented a construction proposal for the metro bridge spanning the Golden Horn.

5- Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge

The FSM Bridge, also known as the "Second Bosphorus Bridge," was built in 1988 and named after Ottoman Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, who took Constantinople in 1453. Istanbul Hisarüstü (European side) and Kavacik (Asian side) are connected by this bridge (Asian side). It's a gravity-anchored steel-pyloned suspension bridge with vertical hangers. The aerodynamic deck is supported by two vertical steel wires. It measures 1,510 meters in length and 39 meters in breadth. The principal span between the towers is 1,090 meters, at a height of 105 meters above road level. The bridge has a 64-meter clearance above sea level. Explore the cities life through bridges!
