Pavillions in Istanbul

Since its founding, Istanbul has served as the capital of some of history's most powerful nations and domains: capital Byzantium of the King Byzas' settlements, capital Constantinople of the Byzantine Empire, and capital Istanbul of the Ottoman Empire. As a result, Istanbul boasts many royal mansions and pavilions dating from the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Republic periods. This page will tell you where they are, when you may visit them, and what their history is.

Following Atatürk's proclamation of the Republic, the Turkish Parliament seized every Ottoman fortress in this way via the Law of 1924.

These royal palaces were restored and made accessible to the public as a historical center. Only the Dolmabahçe Palace remained a presidential fortress until Mustafa Kemal's death, after which it was opened to the public. From Sultanahmet to Besiktas, Ortakoy to Beylerbeyi, Istanbul is home to a plethora of magnificent royal palaces.

There is so much to explore and discover at the magnificent genuine royal palaces of Istanbul, from the Byzantine days, what was formerly Constantinople, and the castles built under the Ottoman dynasty.

Tophane Pavilion

The Tophane Pavilion takes its name from the area of Tophane (which means Cannon processing factory in Turkish, where one formerly existed). It was one of the most important buildings on Tophane Square during the Ottoman period, and it is located on Necatibey Road opposite the Nusretiye mosque. Sultan Abdulmecid commissioned the stand, which was created by British designer William James Smith in 1852. It was especially useful for sultans visiting weapons manufacturing facilities in the region, as well as for bringing distant visitors to the port via the sea, such as the Russian Czar's younger brother Grand duke Konstantin.

Tophane Kiosk is a square-shaped building with two storeys that runs along to the beach. It is built in the European style, as are all other structures of the time, with exquisite handwork roof embellishments and marble chimneys. Tophane Kiosk is now closed to visitors and is run by Mimar Sinan University's Fine Arts department.

Hidiv Pavillion

Hidiv Pavilion is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, on the slopes of the Cubuklu district in the Beykoz area. It was built in 1907 by Italian engineer Delfo Seminati as a living quarters for Abbas Hilmi Pasha, the Ottoman representative (Hidiv or Khedive) of Egypt. The mansion is situated on a large piece of land. There is a magnificent wellspring at the main entry that rises all the way to the rooftop and is protected by stain glass. The building is surrounded by several beautiful wellsprings and ponds.

On a circular layout, a few rooms and corridors are connected, and there is a large lobby with a chimney on the ground floor. Two magnificent rooms may be found on the higher levels. Because of its perspective of the Bosphorus, the pinnacle is the most well-known section of the booth; access to the terrace on top is through a lift or stairs.

Kucuksu Pavilion

Kucuksu Kasri on the Bosphorus was built by Sultan Abdulmecit in the mid-nineteenth century in the Bagce-I Goksu region of the Bosphorus Strait, adjacent to the Anatolian Fortress on the Asian side.

Nikogos Balyan, the royal architect, completed the building in 1857. It has three storeys, including a storm basement with kitchens and other room. Several sultans used Kucuksu as a hunting lodge or a resting spot, and Sultan Abdulaziz rebuilt it, and it has survived till now.
