Eat The Best Kebab in Istanbul!
The meat is grilled on a wood-fired kebab and then served on a platter with braised tomatoes and peppers, rice, or tomato bulgur, as is customary in this area of the world. It may also be folded into a wrap or eaten as a sandwich. The ÅŸiÅŸ kebab (skewered and grilled lamb), the Adana kebab (skewered minced lamb mixed with spices), the Urfa kebab (skewered minced lamb and beef without spice), the patlcanl kebab (eggplant filled with minced lamb), and many more kebabs are popular in Turkey. The döner kebab, which literally means "spinning kebab," is the most renowned kebab in the world. The çag kebab was the progenitor of the döner before it took on its current shape, and it is described in Ottoman travel literature from the 18th century. It was a horizontal stack of beef from Erzurum, Turkey's eastern region.Â
Iskender Efendi, the famous cook who is credited with inventing the döner kebap, wrote in his own family biography that he and his grandfather came up with the idea to roast the lamb vertically rather than horizontally because the cooking juices marinated the entire stack of meat at the same time, giving it a better taste.Â

He has become a worldwide celebrity in only a few years and now has restaurants all over the globe (New York, Miami, Dubai, etc.). Under the name Nusr-et, the meat celebrity with over 26 million Instagram followers has many wonderful meat restaurants in Istanbul, and the quality of the meat is certainly worth the trip, particularly because it also produces Turkish specialities!Â
Ocakbasi Restaurant
Because the meats are cooked in front of you, this restaurant is called an ocakbaÅŸ, which means "in front of the grill." The Adana OcakbaÅŸ lies in the KurtuluÅŸ district, which is a cosmopolitan middle-class area near Taksim. In this traditional setting, you will enjoy delicious grilled meats. On match nights, the restaurant is packed with groups of friends who have come to dine and cheer on their favorite team. A location that is definitely worth seeing.Â
Istanbul's Zubeyir RestaurantÂ
This restaurant, which is adjacent to Taksim Square, is an ocakbaÅŸ (restaurant with an open grill in the middle). The primary draw of this kind of business is the opportunity to dine around the grill. Because the seats close to the grill are usually occupied, you may need to make a reservation ahead of time. There are many other Ocakbasi in this region, but we think this one is the finest. Start with some mezes; the közde patlcan (mashed grilled eggplant), a gavurda salata, and the Van tzatziki are all recommended. Try a çöp ÅŸiÅŸ or sebzeli hot şiÅŸ kebab (skewered meat with spices and veggies) for the main course, and don't forget to wash it down with some cold rak.Â
Seyhmus Kebab Saloon
This location, in Sultanahmet's district, near the Grand Bazaar, is not to be missed. The meals are local specialities from Mardin (city of Eastern Turkey known especially for its meat and pistachios). All meats are ground using a zırık, a rounded double-handled knife, using a specific technique. The kebab, which is made with herbs and spices, is served in an extended shape with a variety of cold and hot appetizers.
