Topkapı Palace and Harem

Topkapı Palace and Harem :

Topkapı Palace is a magnificent museum that is located in the east of Istanbul, Turkey. It is one of the places that visitors must-see while exploring Turkey’s dearest, Istanbul. The Palace’s construction was started in 1460 by the command of Mehmed the Conqueror, who is one of the most famous sultans of Ottoman Empire, and completed in 1478. In the advancing years, the palace extended through additional complemental buildings. The palace served as the main residence of the Ottoman sultans. In 1924, after the establishment of the republic, it was converted into a museum. In the museum, visitors have the opportunity to explore imperial collections of the Ottoman Empire and its history.

Location :

Topkapı Palace is one of the most visited places in Istanbul by tourists and also the common people. It is located in the district, called Fatih. The region where the palace was built, is one of the oldest historical ones. It is one of the masterpieces that symbolizes Istanbul, with its location between the Marmara Sea, the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn

Courtyards :

Topkapı Palace has four courtyards. The visitors enter the palace through the Imperial Gate, also known as the Sultanate Gate. The first courtyard is the largest, and it is the only one that is public. In the reign of the Ottoman Empire, this courtyard was open to the common, unarmed people. It was suitable for ceremonies, and traces of such events still exists. The first courtyard leads to the second courtyard, also called Divan Square. Unlike the first courtyard, only members of the court and official visitors were allowed to enter this part of the palace. This courtyard also consisted of the palace kitchens and confectionaries. In there, the porcelain collection and External Treasury can be visited. The third courtyard used to contain the private residence of the sultan, and the palace school. Only the sultan, his family, servants, and guests who are approved officially could enter here. Also, the imperial jewel collection is exhibited in this part of the palace. The fourth courtyard involves gardens and pavilions. The courtyard is still full of beautiful tulips.

Harem :

Harem’s entrance is underneath the Tower of Justice. In time, the harem became the residence of the Sultan. It contained more than 400 rooms. The sultan’s family used to live there as well. Sultan’s mother, also known as Valide Sultan, was in charge of the Harem. To enter the harem, visitors should have a dedicated ticket.  It is highly recommended for visitors to visit here.
