Explore the Galata Neighbourhood in Istanbul!
Galata is an old and historical neighbourhood in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul. Located on the European side, there are so many things to do around the Galata neighbourhood from shopping to visiting museums and participating in social activities. Here are some activities to do and places to explore around the Galata neighbourhood!
Galata Tower
Galata Tower, which was built in 528 by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius, is considered one of the oldest towers in the world. During the Ottoman period, the tower was used as a fire watchtower in the 18th century.
From the top of the Galata Tower, you can see the amazing view of the Golden Horn and Bosphorus Straits. There is also a legend that says you will marry the person who is with you while climbing to the top of Galata Tower!
Kuledibi
Kuledibi is the area near the Galata Tower, there are lovely cafes, second-hand shops, and souvenir shops where you can spend a great time!
Beyoglu (British Seamen’s) Hospital
Dates back to 1904, the Beyoglu Hospital building was used as British Seamen’s Hospital. There is also a tower near the building which is egg-shaped, it offers an amazing view out to the sea.
In 1924, the British donated the building to the Red Crescent, and after the donation, the building started to serve as a hospital belonging to the Turkish Ministry of Health.
Galata Mevlevi Lodge & Museum
The Galata Mevlevi Lodge (Galata Mevlevihanesi), located at the end of the Galip Dede ramp, is a thrilling place on 6,800 square meters of a vast area that includes numerous Turkish calligraphic art and music items and items which belong to the Mevlevi culture. You should definitely visit this museum if you are interested in Mevlevi culture and old Turkish calligraphy and music!
Serdar-i Ekrem Street
Serdar-i Ekrem Street, which is close to the Galata Tower, is one of the best places for shopping in Istanbul. There are numerous boutiques and antique shops for you to spend some quality time around Galata, and also there are various coffee shops and restaurants that have a great bohemian atmosphere!
