All About Istanbul New Airport
Istanbul Airport (IATA: IST, ICAO: LTFM) (Turkish: Istanbul Havaliman) is Istanbul's primary international airport. It's in the Arnavutköy neighborhood on the city's European side.
Following the shutdown of Istanbul Atatürk Airport for planned passenger flights on April 6, 2019, all scheduled commercial passenger flights were moved to Istanbul Airport. The new airport was also given the IATA airport code IST. The airport will be able to handle 200 million passengers per year if all stages are finished by the mid-2020s.
The New Istanbul Airport
On October 7, 2013, GA (Stanbul Grand Airport) was established with the goal of building and operating Istanbul Airport for the next 25 years. The city core is 35 kilometers from the airport. The building will be finished in four stages. The first phase was completed with the commissioning of three runways and a terminal with a passenger capacity of 90 million. The airport will have a capacity of 200 million people per year once it is completed, with flights to more than 300 destinations.
It was decided to build a new airport to serve Istanbul due to a lack of space to construct an additional runway at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, airport growth being limited due to the city's growth, the Turkish Airport Authority refusing to allow additional cargo or charter flights to the airport, and worsening air traffic congestion. Furthermore, due to a lack of slot capacity and parking spaces, some Turkish Airlines aircraft were based at Sabiha Gökçen Airport[citation needed], which is already at maximum terminal capacity of 25 million passengers and handled 28 million passengers in 2015, after averaging over 20% annual traffic growth since 2013.
The building of Istanbul Airport, which was finished in a record-breaking 42 months, was a huge triumph, but it was also very difficult in many respects. Where is the New Istanbul Airport?
t was decided to construct the new airport at the intersection of roads to Arnavutköy, Göktürk, and Çatalca, north of central Istanbul and between the Black Sea coast towns of Yeniköy [tr], Tayakadın and Akpınar. Near Lake Terkos, the area is a 7,659-hectare (18,930-acre) zone. State-owned forest covered 6,172 hectares (15,250 acres) of this land. Istanbul Airport and Atatürk Airport are about 35 kilometers apart (22 mi). The region included former open-pit coal mines that had been covered up with dirt.
Istanbul Airport's Security
The airport is guarded by 3,500 security professionals and 1,850 police officers, including 750 immigration officials. The site's perimeter is protected using ground radar, fixed CCTV cameras every 60 meters, pan–tilt–zoom cameras every 360 meters, thermal cameras and fiber optic sensors every 720 meters. Up to 9,000 CCTV cameras are used in the operational terminal building.
