History of Galata Tower

One of Istanbul's tallest and most historic buildings is the Galata Tower, or Galata Kulesi in Turkish. A panoramic perspective of the ancient town is offered by the 63 meter (206 foot) high tower.

The Genoese colony of Galata, which lies directly across from ancient Constantinopolis, constructed it as part of the defense wall around their neighborhood in the 14th century. The structure was known as the "Tower of Christ," or Christea Turris. The tower was used to monitor the harbor at the Golden Horn as the Genoese conducted business with the Byzantines. It was used to find flames throughout the city when Mehmet II conquered Constantinople.

Why is Galata Tower Important?

During the Ottoman Empire's first century, Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi became the first flying Turk. He researched airflows and imitated bird wings before leaping from the Galata Tower, flying over the Bosphorus, and landing around 6 kilometers (4 miles) away in the Uskudar area on the Asian side.

Galata Tower was renovated after the Republic and made public in 1967. On top of the tower is a café. There used to be a nightclub, but it was shut down following the most recent repair in 2013. A few elevators will take you there, but you'll need to walk the stairs up three more stories to reach the panoramic terrace, which is 52 meters above the ground.
