History of Suleymaniye Mosque

Overview

Suleymaniye Mosque, which is one of the most important landmarks of Istanbul, has a deep history. Built by the legendary architect, Mimar Sinan, the Mosque’s history traces to the 16th Century. It was the largest design of Mimar Sinan, so, it took eight years to build. Ordered by the Sultan Suleyman, the Mosque stands on a hilltop dominating the Golden Horn. Plus, Suleymaniye Mosque is the largest mosque in Istanbul.

In Suleymaniye Kulliyesi (mosque complex), there is a medrese (religious school), hospital, caravanserai, kitchen, a couple of tombs, and a bazaar. Some of these parts are still being used today. Also, one of the tombs of the Mosque belongs to Mimar Sinan.

There are 3 entrances to the mosque. Inside, the floor is covered with carpets and there are 138 windows. When you enter the mosque, you can see the Mihrab ahead of you. Minbar is on the right of Mihrab. Above, you can see the great dome. Its caliber is 27 meters (88 feet), and its height is 53 meters (173 feet). The mosque is rich in terms of the inner design. There are simple but lovely decorations.

History

Suleymaniye Mosque’s history is a little bumpy. There were some hard times. In 1660, it was desolated by fire and after it was restored under the command of Sultan Mehmet, it was changed into a more baroque style so the original design was altered. The Mosque’s yard was used as a weapon area during World War 1, however, it led to another fire. Until 1956, the restoration was postponed.

In November 2010, the Mosque is re-opened to the public after a long restoration. Today, Suleymaniye Mosque is one of the most popular landmarks in Istanbul. You can enter the mosque from the inner courtyard, however, you should take the shoes off.

Location

Suleymaniye Mosque is close to other landmarks such as Grand Bazaar, Rustem Pasha Mosque, New Mosque, and Spice Bazaar

You can visit the mosque between 10.00 and 18.00 every day! There is no ticket price but it is closed during the pray times.
