Some of Istanbul's most opulent hotels are just where you'd expect them to be: on the Bosphorus's beaches, in one of the city's highest buildings, or in the Neoclassical masterpiece that was custom-built to complement the Orient Express. Hotel Sumahan in Istanbul

This award-winning hotel was renovated from an Ottoman-era distillery by its discriminating Turkish-American proprietors. Guests come from Europe on the hotel's own launch, which is located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus Strait. There are few better ways to start a trip to Istanbul than this. Sumahan also seems to be the perfect location to sample the traditional Turkish liquor raki (best served with meze and fish), since the spirit used in the manufacture of rak, which is made from fig syrup, was produced here for many decades. Nedret's family were the distillery's original proprietors, so it's only fitting that she and her American husband, Mark, are now in charge of this magnificent old historic structure. The fact that they are both architects comes in useful as well.

Istanbul's Four Seasons Hotel

This opulent hotel was originally a late-Ottoman jail that housed authors, painters, and other political prisoners, but it has been so expertly transformed that you'd never realize. Its central position puts it within walking distance of several of Istanbul's most renowned attractions. Istanbul's most renowned sites are only a few minutes' walk away, thanks to its excellent location in the Sultanahmet neighborhood in the center of the ancient city. The Haghia Sophia is the closest, with the vast gardens of the Topkap Palace following closely after, while the Blue Mosque is equally as near in the other way!

Bosphorus Shangri-La

This decommissioned old tobacco factory, which dates back to the Roaring Twenties, has been reborn as one of Istanbul's most renowned hotels. The views from the front rooms and the restaurant terrace, which are almost hugging the shoreline on the European side of the ancient Bosphorus Strait, are spectacular. The service is excellent and, for such a big hotel, surprisingly personable, with everyone from cleaning to bartenders greeting visitors by name. The free cake, macarons, and cookies sent to your room in the afternoon are a lovely touch. The basement pool is very nice, with a constant depth of 1.5m and enough of length for a good swim. This hotel is one of the finest for a family vacation since it is extremely kid-friendly!

Ibrahim-Pasha Hotel

This hotel in the center of Istanbul is popular with sophisticated city-breakers because to its trendy roof patio, comfortable rooms, helpful service, and delicious breakfasts. The Blue Mosque is a short stroll across the old chariot racing stadium. The hotel, unobtrusively situated up a quiet narrow side street off the Hippodrome, is just a short walk across the former chariot racing arena to the Sultanahmet Mosque, with the Haghia Sophia and Topkapı Palace just a few minutes further away. The interior, which was created from a pair of towering, early 20th-century town homes and is stretched over four stories, has been given a modern makeover that highlights its Ottoman origins. Potted plants, blonde-wood flooring, oriental carpets, and pristine white bed linen are just a few examples.
