Description
Established in 1976, SOFA has become, through love and hard work, one of the outstanding “antique” dealers of the art scene in Istanbul.
SOFA’s aim has always been to present a selected, unique wide range of engravings and other print media; jewelry; glass, gold- and silverware; miniatures and calligraphy; tiles, ceramics and mosaics; paintings; reproductions; seals; textiles, embroidery and needlework to a global clientele.
The evaluation to which SOFA’s offers are subjected originate from the purchaser’s understanding of esthetics and to local culture and demand. In an extended sense, the art lover’s views inevitably undergo a change. He develops a deeper insight into the epoch of the art object and its creator. Triggering such a process is an objective SOFA has always held high.
This is one of the most wonderful shops in the city, and the collection Kaşif Gündoğdu has amassed in his antiques emporium is worthy of a museum. After 40 years as the favourite meeting point in Nuruosmaniye, he has moved to Beyoğlu, and old aficionados will be delighted to know it is the same old Sofa, but in happily more soothing less surroundings, far from the mad hungry crowd. The Come here for 19th-century icons and Ottoman miniatures, as well as illuminated books and jewellery, not to mention delightful conversation and civilised music.
